“Understanding why is important, but more important is what you do with that knowledge.”
My approach to counselling is grounded and real. Together, we’ll look at how your past influences today and develop practical ways to shift patterns that aren’t working. I believe everyone is doing their best, shaped by their past and the resources they’ve had along the way. By looking for a counsellor, you’ve already taken the first step toward aligning your life with what truly matters to you. You don’t need to have it all figured out to start changing your life.
I use a variety of counselling approaches as a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) and tailor my work to fit you. If something isn’t working, we’ll adjust until it does. Whether you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or numb, I want to help you reconnect with your own strength and move toward the version of yourself that feels authentic and meaningful.
I bring years of experience in hospital and acute-care settings, with a strong understanding of high-pressure environments, critical incidents, and cumulative stress. I support first responders and healthcare professionals managing moral distress, and burnout. I also bring compassion and understanding to those on the receiving end of medical care and struggling with associated challenges.
I aim to create a space where you feel comfortable and supported. Sometimes that means sitting with you in your struggle; other times it’s about finding practical next steps or laughing at a bad joke (because sometimes laughing really does work better than crying.) Whatever the situation, my goal is for you to feel safe and empowered in the process.
No matter who you are or what you’ve been through, you are never a lost cause. Change is possible. It doesn’t have to be fancy or complicated, just real.

Life can throw us some curveballs, like struggles with emotional regulation, communication skills, and holding our boundaries, which can keep us from living our best lives. But together, we can tackle these challenges using a personalized blend of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Talk Therapy, sprinkled with the uplifting vibes of Solution-Focused techniques. We’ll explore how your biology, environment, and psychology can be realigned to help you reach your goals—and yes, we’ll have infographics and worksheets to make the process even more engaging!
In our sessions, we’ll dive into the many layers of your mental well-being, emphasizing acceptance, building resilience, and growth. The journey is about discovering your strengths while working toward your goals, with a mix of psychoeducation and personal work between sessions. Expect accountability, honesty, reflection — along with tears, laughter, and a touch of age-appropriate salty language!
My space is all about inclusivity, and I truly appreciate what each person brings to it. I value the wisdom from my elders and the raw honesty and energy from younger voices. With 15 years of experience as an educator for kids aged 4 to 10, alongside work with youth in the justice system and adults with diverse abilities, I’ve learned firsthand the power of those different perspectives. Since making a mid-life switch to become a counselor, I’ve focused on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity (ADH), mood disorders, PTSD, and addiction. Authenticity is the key to creating a welcoming, non-judgmental environment for everyone.
Let’s embrace the beauty of vulnerability and honesty together, and don’t be surprised if we share a laugh over the absurdity of life—the moments when we could have shone just a bit brighter!

I am a counselling student at Island Clinical Counselling working with youth (11+), adults, parents, couples, and families. My approach is warm, trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming, and focused on helping clients understand their emotional patterns and behaviours while developing practical tools for meaningful change.
I also specialize in digital wellness, including video gaming disorder (VGD), problematic smartphone use (PSU), and social media overuse. Digital habits often start as ways to manage stress or emotional pain but can easily become their own challenge through reinforced reward cycles, avoidance, and identity-based rewards. My work helps clients understand both the underlying needs as well as the behavioural habits and biopsychosocial drives that keep them feeling stuck.
Technology-related addictions often reveal deeper concerns such as anxiety, trauma, perfectionism, identity challenges, or neurodiversity. When issues fall outside my scope—such as body dysmorphic disorder, eating disorders, or concerns requiring medical, psychiatric, physiotherapy, or occupational therapy involvement—I collaborate with and refer to appropriate specialists while continuing to support the client’s emotional wellbeing. Hello and welcome. If you’re reading this you are making a choice to improve your life, and I am here to help. I have 8 years of clinical experience, am a proud father, and dedicated husband. I offer talk and somatic therapy, and life planning.
In a first session my hope is to identify something you can do to improve your life as soon as possible. Often, especially if you are new to counselling, this requires a lot of talking. Fortunately I’m a good, boarding on great, listener. If you’re stuck that means you’re thinking about your issue in the same way. Talking with another person who is deeply listening allows new ideas to emerge. From these, we collaborate on an action. If you pay attention to the results you will move towards something better.
If you are interested in couples or families sessions this work is close to my heart. For parents, the best way to support your children is to become the best you. Our intimate relationships should improve over time. If they are not it’s likely because we are avoiding something - often short term conflict. Avoiding (sort of) works in the present by sacrificing the future. Not a good idea. Remember, the amount of distress, dread and hopelessness we may feel is proportionate to the relief and growth we can gain if we become brave enough to speak truthfully. Plus, we gain humility and connection by asking for help.
I work with all genders, but have an additional specialty in working with men. Personally, I have found it difficult to find other males who embody healthy masculinity. Most of the men I speak to share this experience. I’m here to offer encouragement and direction for men. You can have the adventure of your life, if you take the responsibility of your life, and humble yourself enough to ask for help when needed.
If you have some experience with therapy and are finding talk therapy limiting, or want to gain a deeper understanding of yourself, I also offer Hakomi. Hakomi is a nourishment based somatic approach to assisted self discovery. Through mindfulness practices we listen to the body to explore and integrate our unconscious, with the intention of becoming whole. We all need support in asking for and receiving our souls deepest needs.
Thank you for accepting the responsibility of your life, I can promise it’s worth doing so for you and everyone you care about.

NOT ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS
Hi everyone! I am so excited and happy to be a part of Island Clinical Counselling! My name is Sam, and I am lucky to have grown up on this beautiful island, in Nanaimo. Reaching out for support takes strength and vulnerability. You are not alone, and I’m so happy you’ve landed here.
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care from VIU and a Master’s in Counselling Psychology from Athabasca University. I have been passionate about supporting people for as long as I can remember. Over the past decade, I have supported children, youth, and families in the public school system. I have a deep passion for working with children and youth. I believe that they remind adults to slow down and help adults to see the world through a pure and authentic lens. I work from a holistic, trauma-informed and strength-based approach. I believe that when we feel truly heard and seen, we can create the changes we are ready for and desire.
I believe that humans need and thrive with connection, love, and support. If we lack connection, love and/or support, we are imbalanced. In turn, this can lead to all kinds of feelings (lost, defeated, stuck, depressed, angry, confused, etc.). I believe that with the right tools and support in place, we can slowly start to gain the confidence, feel better about ourselves, and begin our healing journey. I believe that all people are truly doing the best they can with what they know, the situations they find themselves in, and with the tools they have. No one is perfect; we all need extra help and support now and again. That is what human existence is about, isn’t it? Reaching out and asking for help when we need it. But I know how difficult and how vulnerable that first step can be. I want you to know I’m here for you. Let’s start your healing journey together.
Another passion of mine is maternal mental health. It is an area of expertise I plan to pursue through ongoing education so I can provide evidence-based support to women during this beautiful and chaotic stage of their lives.
Outside the office, you can find me playing with and raising my kids, spending time with my husband and family, soaking up the sunshine at the beach, camping, travelling, lifting weights, and reading.
Direct Billing: If your plan covers a Canadian Certified Counsellor or a Registered Clinical Counsellor then it should cover my services when you submit the receipt. I can direct bill to Greenshield and Blue Cross. I will be able to direct bill more insurance plans soon. Hi, my name is Shannon Heppner (she/they). I am a counselling intern with Island Clinical Counselling in the Nanaimo locations. I will be taking on clients and offering counselling in the community starting in January. My approach is holistic, warm, trauma informed, strength and resilience focused, an affirming and safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals, neurodiversity-affirming, with a lens focused on understanding thoughts, emotions and behaviours to create meaningful shifts in affecting change.
I also have a background of 20+ years in frontline work as a responder and rescue specialist. This first-hand work and education gave me a deep understanding of the trauma and resilience effects frontline workers face and how or when it is time to reach out. You are not alone.
When I am not working, I am a continuously learning through education and connection. I love connecting with my family and friends, hiking and exploring in all weather, kayaking, boating and fishing, walking my dog and or meditating.
I originally come from Powell River. In this nature robust small coastal community, I spent most of my time working and playing in the bush or on the water. Eventually started my career as a rescue specialist for the Canadian Coast Guard which brought me to Vancouver Island. I got my Community Mental Health Worker Certificate and had the opportunity to work along side people who lived with barriers to housing, mental health, substance use and brain injury. Working alongside these folks drew on my curiosity of how can I do more to support people and the barriers that sometimes come with being human. I went to Vancouver Island University and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Child and Youth Care. From there I was able to work along side teens and children in the schools as well as their families in community and nature. I am currently completing my Masters in Counselling through City University of Seattle.

Healing is possible when we reconnect with ourselves in new ways. Sometimes, patterns that once helped us cope begin to limit how we relate to ourselves and others. In our work together, we’ll slow down with curiosity and compassion, supporting greater alignment between your thoughts, emotions, and nervous system so change feels grounded and lasting.
I work with individuals navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship concerns, substance use, identity questions, those who work as first responders, and those going through major life transitions. My approach is grounded in the NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM). NARM is a relational, trauma-informed approach that supports lasting change by working beneath surface symptoms. This work can be especially helpful if you find yourself stuck in self-doubt, people-pleasing, perfectionism, relationship conflict, burnout, or patterns that no longer serve you.
I integrate person-centred and solution-focused therapy with mindfulness, somatic awareness, and emotion-focused techniques. Our work is collaborative and paced with care, grounded in consent, agency, and respect. Whether you are seeking support for a specific challenge or looking for deeper personal growth, therapy can be a space to reconnect with clarity, choice, and self-trust.
I offer both virtual and in-person sessions with flexible scheduling to support your needs. If you’re curious about starting, I’d be happy to connect and see if we’re a good fit.

Hi! My name is Cady (she/her) and one of my greatest passions is helping others through life’s challenges in a real and authentic way. You deserve to have the space to say exactly what you’re thinking without feeling like you’re walking on eggshells, censoring yourself, or living in fear of judgement. What you are feeling and experiencing deserves to be acknowledged and processed: I want to help with that!
I am comfortable talking about the hard, uncomfortable, and “ugly” parts of life. With over 8 years of experience working as a counsellor in subject areas such as grief and loss, mental health, substance use, and unhealthy family and relationship dynamics, I approach each session with a balance of compassion and transparent feedback. In working together, I hope to empower you to acknowledge past wounds, name and honour your boundaries, find your voice, and move through life with more self-compassion and psycho-emotional tools.
I have avid experience working with marginalized populations and welcome all individuals seeking support with open arms!

(She/Her/Hers)
Master of Counselling Psychology, Honours B.A. in Psychology, Early Childhood Educator
I offer counselling to children, teens, parents, caregivers, siblings, and families. I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor/Psychotherapist in BC, an ADHD Clinical Services Provider, an End-of-Life Doula, and a member of the BC Play Therapy Association.
My therapeutic approach is evidence-based, individualized, and guided by the needs of the client. In sessions, I blend evidence-informed strategies with a compassionate, practical, and conversational style. Sessions are grounded in a family-systems truth that when one family member grows, the whole family rises with them.
I have extensive experience working alongside neurodiverse children, teens, and adults, including those with ADHD, Autism, learning differences, trauma, and sensory needs. I recently completed training to become an ADHD Clinical Services Provider.
In one-on-one sessions, I strive to create a therapeutic environment where every individual feels understood, respected, and celebrated for who they are. My goal is to offer tools that are realistic and help people feel more confident in navigating emotional regulation, behaviour challenges, work and school stress, grief and loss, and complex family dynamics.
With children, I combine play therapy, sand tray therapy, art therapy, somatic therapy, DBT, and narrative therapy in sensory safe sessions. With adults, I draw on CBT, DBT, somatic therapy, narrative therapy, grief and loss counselling, as well as generational trauma and burnout recovery strategies.
With families, it is my goal to support children and parents in building confidence, strengthening communication, and navigating challenging behaviours without shame or judgment. Whether a family is seeking support with emotional regulation, school challenges, sibling dynamics, or everyday stress, I offer tools that are realistic, affirming, and tailored to each family’s unique needs.
When needed, I focus on elevating the voices of children and caregivers within the community. I frequently liaise with schools, MCFD, medical professionals, and community agencies as an advocate and support.
I have lived experienced as an adult with ADHD and am a parent of children with diverse needs. I have navigated the complexities of academic, medical, and therapeutic systems as both a parent and a professional.
In the fall of 2026, I will be pursuing a Doctor of Counselling and Psychotherapy. The focus of my thesis is understanding the impact of childhood diagnoses on parenting and how to better support the well-being of all family members when a developmental or medical diagnosis is made.

Angus Valleau
Hi there! My name is Angus Valleau.
I’m currently completing my internship at Island Clinical Counselling as I work towards becoming a licensed Clinical Counsellor. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and am finishing my Master’s in Clinical Counselling.
For the past five years, I’ve worked with children and young people who are neurodiverse, especially in pediatrics. I’ve also had experience supporting people of all ages and abilities. I decided to return to school because I noticed that helping people achieve overall wellness isn’t just about the body—it’s about mind and body together. I want to see and support the whole person.
I strongly believe in treating others with “unconditional positive regard,” which means trusting the best in people and respecting different perspectives and ways of being. My approach is inclusive, and I aim to reduce stigma and challenge traditional labels or judgments about mental health and challenges.
In my practice, I follow a trauma-informed approach and often use cognitive methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I also incorporate other techniques such as Emotion-Focused Therapy, systemic approaches, and narrative therapy.
A Note on Movement and Therapy: Not everyone is comfortable talking about their feelings or experiences, and that’s okay. There are many ways to support mental health, including movement-based approaches like dance, expressive arts, or somatic therapies. These methods can help you connect with your body and mind without requiring a lot of talking about difficult topics.
Physical movement and mental health are closely linked. Even if your main focus is on emotional wellbeing, learning about how your body moves and responds can be very helpful. Sometimes, understanding your body’s responses—like feelings of anxiety, fear, anger, or even excitement—can help you stay more balanced during stressful moments.
Remember, there’s no one right way to do therapy. Everyone is different, and I believe in offering options that suit your needs.
I look forward to seeing you at Island Clinical Counselling!

If you’re looking for a therapist to truly meet you where you’re at with validation and empathy, please reach out. I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC). My approach is flexible and integrative, adapting to your needs and situation, considering bio-psycho-socio-spiritual influences on your life and wellbeing. Together, we will balance support and processing with skills and resource enhancement, tailored to you and your goals. Working with children and youth, I adjust for their stage of development through play, activity and age-appropriate talk strategies.
I was “raised” as a counsellor in trauma-informed, intersectional, feminist theory which remains with me in my prioritization of trust and safety in the therapeutic relationship, efforts to level the power differential between therapist and client and acknowledgment of client wisdom, strength and expertise on their own experience. I recognize that we live in social, cultured and gendered contexts that present disproportionate concerns for gender, sexual, racial and cultural minorities and work to create a safe space for diverse folks in the LGBTQ2SI+, Indigenous and multicultural communities. I started in the social service field in 2005, spending much of my career supporting women and young survivors of violence, abuse and neglect, those with multiple barriers to housing and indigenous communities in northern BC.
