Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is an effective treatment for PTSD, trauma (including developmental trauma), anxiety (including phobias, panic attacks and performance anxiety), OCD, as well as depression. EMDR does not require talking about the distressing memory in detail. EMDR helps clear away limiting beliefs by processing distressing memories.
EMDR tends to be a quicker treatment than other methods of therapy.
For all ages.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is an evidence based form of psychotherapy that utilizes back and forth eye movements that are combined with a technique called voluntary memory/image replacement. This is used to help clients address anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, grief, addiction and many other mental and physical conditions. Together they work to re-program the way in which the destressing images and memories are stored in the brain so that they no longer trigger strong physical and emotional reactions in your body.
Eye Movement Integration Therapy
Eye movements are closely linked to memory. By guiding the eyes smoothly across the visual field, the brain can revisit and reorganize traumatic memories, integrating them into a coherent story and storing them in the past. This reduces the emotional intensity and power of triggers—such as sounds, smells, or images—that once caused distress. After an initial intake, the therapist guides the client’s eyes through 24 different directions, paired with key words linked to the trauma. Emotional and sensory memories may arise during the process, but as the brain processes them, reactions fade. A single traumatic event may be resolved in one session, while complex trauma requires multiple sessions spaced about two weeks apart for optimal processing.
Substance Use Counselling
This session is for individuals of any age looking for support to process their own or a loved one's substance use.
Intern Counselling Session
This is a great opportunity to engage in the counselling process at a lower cost. Life can throw us some curveballs, like struggles with emotional regulation, communication skills, and holding our boundaries, which can keep us from living our best lives. But together, we can tackle these challenges using a personalized blend of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Talk Therapy, sprinkled with the uplifting vibes of Solution-Focused techniques. We’ll explore how your biology, environment, and psychology can be realigned to help you reach your goals—and yes, we’ll have infographics and worksheets to make the process even more engaging!
In our sessions, we’ll dive into the many layers of your mental well-being, emphasizing acceptance, building resilience, and growth. The journey is about discovering your strengths while working toward your goals, with a mix of psychoeducation and personal work between sessions. Expect accountability, honesty, reflection — along with tears, laughter, and a touch of age-appropriate salty language!
My space is all about inclusivity, and I truly appreciate what each person brings to it. I value the wisdom from my elders and the raw honesty and energy from younger voices. With 15 years of experience as an educator for kids aged 4 to 10, alongside work with youth in the justice system and adults with diverse abilities, I’ve learned firsthand the power of those different perspectives. Since making a mid-life switch to become a counselor, I’ve focused on ADHD, mood disorders, PTSD, and addiction. Authenticity is the key to creating a welcoming, non-judgmental environment for everyone.
Let’s embrace the beauty of vulnerability and honesty together, and don’t be surprised if we share a laugh over the absurdity of life—the moments when we could have shone just a bit brighter!

I aim to create a non-judgmental space where the relationship between client and counsellor is built on trust and mutual respect. I see therapy as a journey—one that requires patience, empathy, and a deep respect for your unique story. My approach is person-centered, meaning I believe you are the expert on your own life. You’re in the driver’s seat, and I’m here to support and collaborate with you to find a path forward that truly fits who you are and what you need.
Growing up with a counsellor for a parent had a big impact on me—it taught me the importance of finding and using my voice. I’ve seen how easy it is for people to feel like they’ve lost that sense of influence in their own lives. Through counselling, I hope to help you reconnect with your voice and feel more empowered to take back control over your story.

Sometimes life can present situations and experiences that can leave us feeling overwhelmed, stuck, and alone. Although reaching out for support can feel vulnerable, it can also be an opportunity to explore new possibilities.
My passion for counseling has always aligned with my personal and professional values of compassion, non-judgment, mutuality and respect. I enjoy meeting people where they are on their journey, focusing on their strengths, and supporting them in the direction they wish to go. The power of human resiliency and the capacity of all people to heal are the foundations from which I work.
If you are at a place on your journey where you are struggling and are curious about what counselling could offer, I would be honoured to support you. I am here to hold space for you in a safe, trusting, trauma-informed, and non-judgmental environment, to meet you where you wish to begin, listen to your story, and walk along side you on your path, so to speak.
I am so grateful to have the opportunity to join with people to help them access their capacity, focus on their strengths, move through obstacles, and live a meaningful life that reflects their personal values.

Hello! I am grateful for this opportunity to work alongside the amazing group of clinicians at Island Clinical Counselling located in the unceded and traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation.
Counselling allows a special opportunity to be witness to the lives of others. I am committed to this work in the spirit of compassion and with respect and curiosity. My approach is holistic, trauma informed and culturally sensitive. I believe in the importance of understanding the context of one’s experience and respect that each individual lives within a system that influences their well-being. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is essential for creating a safe space for people to share what is authentic and meaningful and for people to be seen and heard.
I began my career as a child and youth care worker because I wanted to help those who felt they didn’t have a voice. Listening, being present and witnessing a person’s story involves walking alongside and guiding attention and awareness. I believe there is potential within everyone for healing. I love watching people come alive, shining their uniqueness and shared humanity. Since completing my master’s degree, I have been working in community-based settings, with the local health authority and in post secondary education through direct counselling roles, teaching and in leadership positions related to counselling services for couples, children, youth and families. I am currently a member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) and working towards further certification.

Hi everyone! I am so excited and happy to be a part of Island Clinical Counselling! My name is Sam, and I am lucky to have grown up on this beautiful island, in Nanaimo. Reaching out for support takes strength and vulnerability. You are not alone, and I’m so happy you’ve landed here.
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care from VIU and a Master’s in Counselling Psychology from Athabasca University. I have been passionate about supporting people for as long as I can remember. Over the past decade, I have supported children, youth, and families in the public school system. I have a deep passion for working with children and youth. I believe that they remind adults to slow down and help adults to see the world through a pure and authentic lens. I work from a holistic, trauma-informed and strength-based approach. I believe that when we feel truly heard and seen, we can create the changes we are ready for and desire.
I believe that humans need and thrive with connection, love, and support. If we lack connection, love and/or support, we are imbalanced. In turn, this can lead to all kinds of feelings (lost, defeated, stuck, depressed, angry, confused, etc.). I believe that with the right tools and support in place, we can slowly start to gain the confidence, feel better about ourselves, and begin our healing journey. I believe that all people are truly doing the best they can with what they know, the situations they find themselves in, and with the tools they have. No one is perfect; we all need extra help and support now and again. That is what human existence is about, isn’t it? Reaching out and asking for help when we need it. But I know how difficult and how vulnerable that first step can be. I want you to know I’m here for you. Let’s start your healing journey together.
Another passion of mine is maternal mental health. It is an area of expertise I plan to pursue through ongoing education so I can provide evidence-based support to women during this beautiful and chaotic stage of their lives.
Outside the office, you can find me playing with and raising my kids, spending time with my husband and family, soaking up the sunshine at the beach, camping, travelling, lifting weights, and reading.

Angus Valleau
Hi there. My name is Angus Valleau. I am interning at Island Clinical Counselling on my way towards becoming a licensed Clinical Counsellor. I have a bachelors degree in Kinesiology, and am currently completing my Masters degree in Clinical Counselling.
For the past five years, I have been working in pediatrics with neurodiverse individuals, but I also have had experience working with people of various age groups and abilities. I decided to go back to school to pursue Clinical Counselling because I began to notice a gap in my ability to help people towards wellness: ultimately, people are more than just bodies, and I aim to see the whole person before me, body and mind.
I really believe in the active practice of what is commonly referred to as “unconditional positive regard”, such as believing the best in people and honouring the varying perspectives and orientations of people and the different ways of being within our world. Following this inclination, my approach is inclusive and I emphasize de-pathologizing ways of being or challenges that have historically used oppressive language and/or that has otherwise stigmatized individuals.
Regarding the practice of counselling, I personally find myself gravitating more towards cognitive based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, but I am also a proponent of other modalities such as Emotion Focused Therapy, systemic-based approaches, and narrative-based approaches.
I hope to see you around at Island Clinical Counselling.
Education:
Currently completing my Masters degree in Clinical Counselling from City University of Seattle (estimated completion 2026) Bachelors degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Psychology from the University of British Columbia (2019)

If you’re looking for a therapist to truly meet you where you’re at with validation and empathy, please reach out. I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC). My approach is flexible and integrative, adapting to your needs and situation, considering bio-psycho-socio-spiritual influences on your life and wellbeing. Together, we will balance support and processing with skills and resource enhancement, tailored to you and your goals. Working with children and youth, I adjust for their stage of development through play, activity and age-appropriate talk strategies.
I was “raised” as a counsellor in trauma-informed, intersectional, feminist theory which remains with me in my prioritization of trust and safety in the therapeutic relationship, efforts to level the power differential between therapist and client and acknowledgment of client wisdom, strength and expertise on their own experience. I recognize that we live in social, cultured and gendered contexts that present disproportionate concerns for gender, sexual, racial and cultural minorities and work to create a safe space for diverse folks in the LGBTQ2SI+, Indigenous and multicultural communities. Evolution and growth are an innate part of the human experience, but sometimes we get stuck. That’s where counselling can help. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, symptoms of trauma, self-identity, relationship issues, substance-use, or other challenges, we can co-create sessions that focus on your personal goals. I see it as my job to help create a safe and supportive space where clients can reconnect to their inner wants and needs. As we start to identify what we want for ourselves, we can then see how we sometimes act in ways that do not serve us.
As a certified clinical counsellor, specializing in trauma-informed practices, I blend person-centred and solution-focused approaches to foster acceptance and change. I use an integrative approach that combines inquiry, mindfulness, somatic and emotion-focused modalities, while focusing on the present moment. Core elements in my practice include consent, agency, and respect. While I continue to evolve my training and practice, you are the expert in your life. Together we can create sessions that fit your needs.
Counselling is an exciting and rewarding journey, and I am deeply grateful to have the privilege to work alongside clients. Making the choice to change and grow is powerful.

Welcome! My name is Cady (she/her) and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor proudly representing Island Clinical Counselling. I am a lifelong learner that lives, works, and plays among the elements of nature on Vancouver Island. My compassion and interest in working alongside individuals of all ages, couples, and families started at a young age. My passion for therapeutic work motivated me to complete my undergraduate degree in Child and Youth Care, gain experience as a Child Life Specialist, and acquire a Master in Counselling through Athabasca University. I have professional experience working with queer and indigenous communities as well as individuals living with diverse abilities, mental health, and substance use. I also have over 5 years of experience working with those impacted by terminal illness, grief and loss, and sudden loss from suicide and fentanyl poisoning.

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Thompson Rivers University and a Master of Counselling degree at Athabasca University. I am in the process of registering with a regulatory body. For over a decade, I have supported children, adolescents, and adults with mental health concerns and I am currently available to work with individuals, couples, and families. I enjoy working collaboratively and believe in meeting you where you are.
My background is in exposure and response prevention (ERP) for anxiety-related concerns including OCD, hoarding, panic, and phobias. I work with couples in monogamous and consensually non-monogamous relationships and provide 2SLGBTQIA+ affirming care.
