Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is an effective treatment for PTSD, trauma (including developmental trauma), anxiety (including phobias, panic attacks and performance anxiety), OCD, as well as depression. EMDR does not require talking about the distressing memory in detail. EMDR helps clear away limiting beliefs by processing distressing memories.
EMDR tends to be a quicker treatment than other methods of therapy.
For all ages.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is an evidence based form of psychotherapy that utilizes back and forth eye movements that are combined with a technique called voluntary memory/image replacement. This is used to help clients address anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, grief, addiction and many other mental and physical conditions. Together they work to re-program the way in which the destressing images and memories are stored in the brain so that they no longer trigger strong physical and emotional reactions in your body.
Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy
Exposure therapy is one of the most effective approaches for overcoming phobias, anxiety, and OCD symptoms. Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) integrates traditional exposure therapy with immersive VR to simulate feared situations in a safe and controlled way. Gradual and repeated exposures enable individuals to gain confidence in their ability to handle their feared situations and help the brain learn that the feared situation isn’t dangerous.
Music and Voice-Integrated Therapy
Music is important to individuals and cultures across the lifespan. Music-Integrated therapy incorporates music into the therapy setting in a variety of ways. Using music has been shown to be effective for behavioural, emotional, physiological, psychosocial, and psychological needs. Using music in therapy can help clients feel more connected to the therapeutic experience. It can help relax the nervous system. It has been shown to have positive effects for neurodiverse clients such as those with ADHD and Autism. Voice-integrated therapy uses the breath, songs, and dialogue to help promote wellness. This is particularly useful for individuals with trauma. A music-integrated therapist weaves music into a typical counselling session in ways that fit with the client’s needs. Some people find it easier to share what is on their heart and mind by using songs that represent how they feel. Music and voice-integrated therapy open the door for this type of expression, under the care of a qualified therapist.

Our student counsellors are able to provide the same service as our other counsellors, but will be completing hours towards their counselling degrees. Interns are closely supervised. I am a counselling student at Island Clinical Counselling working with youth (11+), adults, parents, couples, and families. My approach is warm, trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming, and focused on helping clients understand their emotional patterns and behaviours while developing practical tools for meaningful change.
I also specialize in digital wellness, including video gaming disorder (VGD), problematic smartphone use (PSU), and social media overuse. Digital habits often start as ways to manage stress or emotional pain but can easily become their own challenge through reinforced reward cycles, avoidance, and identity-based rewards. My work helps clients understand both the underlying needs as well as the behavioural habits and biopsychosocial drives that keep them feeling stuck.
Technology-related addictions often reveal deeper concerns such as anxiety, trauma, perfectionism, identity challenges, or neurodiversity. When issues fall outside my scope—such as body dysmorphic disorder, eating disorders, or concerns requiring medical, psychiatric, physiotherapy, or occupational therapy involvement—I collaborate with and refer to appropriate specialists while continuing to support the client’s emotional wellbeing. Below are the areas I work with directly.

Hi, my name is David Alder (he/him). I’m a counselling intern with Island Clinical Counselling at the Duncan location. I’ll be taking on new clients and offering counselling to community members, including on a pay what you can basis.
I originally come from Squamish, the small coastal BC logging town I grew up in and moved to Victoria to get my Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from UVic. Since then, I decided I loved living on Vancouver Island so much I wanted to stay.
I have spent eight years working with unhoused and housing insecure populations in downtown Victoria, with a focus on housing and supporting clients with concurrent disorders involved in the forensic psychiatric stream of the legal system. As a result, I am passionate about advocating for those who experience stigmatization and social injustice.
When I am not working, I love to be in the kitchen, on the couch, or in the water. Some of my favourite hobbies are home cooking, movies, gaming, woodworking, paddleboarding, spa days, and world travel!
Life can be stressful at the best of times and I’m here to support you through that if you choose to work with me. I’ve done some work supporting neurodivergent children. I also have experience with adults living with concurrent disorders including trauma, addictions, mental health crises, housing insecurity, and more. Across the course of this experience, I have had the privilege and honour of working with folks of all different backgrounds, orientations, faiths, abilities, and lived experiences. As an LGBTQIA2S+ ally, I have a passion for supporting those who may feel they have had to search hard for it. Furthermore, as someone living with ADH and Mild Tourette syndrome, my lived experience with invisible disabilities informs my practice.
I am a believer in setting goals, focusing on strengths, and highlighting successes, even amongst setbacks. In my approach to counselling, I strive to bring empirically supported practices into a client-centered framework.
David runs a group for kids ages 5 through 13 at our Duncan office.

I am a counselling intern at Island Clinical Counselling specializing in Body Focused Repetitive Behaviours (compulsive skin picking, nail biting or hair pulling) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity (ADH). My approach emphasizes practical management tools and self-compassion. I am a cisgender man of colour and use he/him pronouns.
I am currently completing my Master’s in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University, but my journey started with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of British Columbia. This unconventional path to counselling has helped me relate to the clients who did not grow up with conversations around mental health or are discovering it later in life. I was born in Chilliwack BC after my parents immigrated from central China. My passion for counselling stems from overcoming my own compulsive skin-picking along with decades of shame and anxiety. To learn more, I welcome you to listen to Fidget, my podcast about my BFRB journey. I also help host trainings for other clinicians in BFRBs. This is an area of expertise for me.

Hi, my name is Melissa and I’m excited to be joining the team at ICC.
Sometimes life can feel heavy, uncertain, or isolating. Reaching out for support takes courage and vulnerability, but it also opens the door for growth and change.
I became a counsellor so that I could provide a safe place for others to share their struggles. Having one safe person in our life who will listen with compassion and without judgement can make all the difference.
As a counsellor, my goal is to provide a safe, non-judgmental space where healing can unfold organically. I draw upon on both evidence-based therapies and mind–body practices to support my clients effectively, while creating a therapeutic relationship rooted in connection, empathy and care.

When we are thinking about starting therapy, we don’t always know what we want, we just know we want change and are curious about our own potential. My approach supports this curiosity and allows us to come together to clarify your goals and navigate how we get there.
My hope is that through our work, you gain deeper self-understanding, confidence in managing distress, and/or align your life more closely with your values. This might include gaining insight into your emotions, strengthening relationships, or letting go of patterns that no longer serve you.
I am a registered social worker with over 12 years of experience in mental health, eating disorders, substance use, trauma, grief and loss. I also recognize my culture and identities may differ from those of my clients, and I strive to create safety through open dialogue about difference, values, and accessibility needs. Welcome, I’m Kate, a counselling graduate student at the University of Victoria. I have nearly ten years of experience in the mental health field, and in that time I’ve come to deeply admire the innate capacity people have to heal, adapt, and create meaning in their lives. I offer counselling for individuals, children, and couples (of all genders and orientations), and I always aim to create a space that feels safe, compassionate, and authentic.
My approach to counselling is person-centered, which means I see you as the expert on your own life. My role is to support you in uncovering what feels true and meaningful for you. I believe in the healing power of self-exploration and self-compassion — they help us move through life with more ease, strength, and a deeper sense of contentment. I’ve also come to believe that the more we can gently look at all the parts of ourselves — and allow them to be safely seen by others — the more freedom we have to make conscious choices about how we want to live.
A quote that informs my work: “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” — Carl Rogers
It would be an honour to walk alongside you for a little while.

If you’re looking for a therapist to truly meet you where you’re at with validation and empathy, please reach out. I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC). My approach is flexible and integrative, adapting to your needs and situation, considering bio-psycho-socio-spiritual influences on your life and wellbeing. Together, we will balance support and processing with skills and resource enhancement, tailored to you and your goals. Working with children and youth, I adjust for their stage of development through play, activity and age-appropriate talk strategies.
I was “raised” as a counsellor in trauma-informed, intersectional, feminist theory which remains with me in my prioritization of trust and safety in the therapeutic relationship, efforts to level the power differential between therapist and client and acknowledgment of client wisdom, strength and expertise on their own experience. I recognize that we live in social, cultured and gendered contexts that present disproportionate concerns for gender, sexual, racial and cultural minorities and work to create a safe space for diverse folks in the LGBTQ2SI+, Indigenous and multicultural communities. Hello! I am grateful for this opportunity to work alongside the amazing group of clinicians at Island Clinical Counselling located in the unceded and traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation. I am a counselling intern with the team.
Counselling allows a special opportunity to be witness to the lives of others. I am committed to this work in the spirit of compassion and with respect and curiosity. My approach is holistic, trauma informed and culturally sensitive. I believe in the importance of understanding the context of one’s experience and respect that each individual lives within a system that influences their well-being. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is essential for creating a safe space for people to share what is authentic and meaningful and for people to be seen and heard.
I began my career as a child and youth care worker because I wanted to help those who felt they didn’t have a voice. Listening, being present and witnessing a person’s story involves walking alongside and guiding attention and awareness. I believe there is potential within everyone for healing. I love watching people come alive, shining their uniqueness and shared humanity. Since completing my master’s degree, I have been working in community-based settings, with the local health authority and in post secondary education through direct counselling roles, teaching and in leadership positions related to counselling services for couples, children, youth and families. I am currently a member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) and working towards further certification.

Hello and welcome. If you’re reading this you are making a choice to improve your life, and I am here to help. I have 8 years of clinical experience, am a proud father, and dedicated husband. I offer talk and somatic therapy, and life planning.
In a first session my hope is to identify something you can do to improve your life as soon as possible. Often, especially if you are new to counselling, this requires a lot of talking. Fortunately I’m a good, boarding on great, listener. If you’re stuck that means you’re thinking about your issue in the same way. Talking with another person who is deeply listening allows new ideas to emerge. From these, we collaborate on an action. If you pay attention to the results you will move towards something better.
If you are interested in couples or families sessions this work is close to my heart. For parents, the best way to support your children is to become the best you. Our intimate relationships should improve over time. If they are not it’s likely because we are avoiding something - often short term conflict. Avoiding (sort of) works in the present by sacrificing the future. Not a good idea. Remember, the amount of distress, dread and hopelessness we may feel is proportionate to the relief and growth we can gain if we become brave enough to speak truthfully. Plus, we gain humility and connection by asking for help.
I work with all genders, but have an additional specialty in working with men. Personally, I have found it difficult to find other males who embody healthy masculinity. Most of the men I speak to share this experience. I’m here to offer encouragement and direction for men. You can have the adventure of your life, if you take the responsibility of your life, and humble yourself enough to ask for help when needed.
If you have some experience with therapy and are finding talk therapy limiting, or want to gain a deeper understanding of yourself, I also offer Hakomi. Hakomi is a nourishment based somatic approach to assisted self discovery. Through mindfulness practices we listen to the body to explore and integrate our unconscious, with the intention of becoming whole. We all need support in asking for and receiving our souls deepest needs.
Thank you for accepting the responsibility of your life, I can promise it’s worth doing so for you and everyone you care about.
Areas of Focus:
Hakomi (mindfulness-based, body-centred assisted self-study) Family Therapy & Parenting Couples Therapy/Relationship Issues Mental health for all genders with an additional specialty with male identifying clients ADHD Burn out and compassion fatigue Assertiveness & boundary practice Developing a life plan Grief and Loss Trauma Autism Addiction and Problematic Substance Use Anxiety Depression Neurodiversity Support for Families Personal Growth and Self-Awareness

(She/Her/Hers)
Master of Counselling Psychology, Honours B.A. in Psychology, Early Childhood Educator
I offer counselling to children, teens, parents, caregivers, siblings, and families. I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor/Psychotherapist in BC, an ADHD Clinical Services Provider, an End-of-Life Doula, and a member of the BC Play Therapy Association.
My therapeutic approach is evidence-based, individualized, and guided by the needs of the client. In sessions, I blend evidence-informed strategies with a compassionate, practical, and conversational style. Sessions are grounded in a family-systems truth that when one family member grows, the whole family rises with them.
I have extensive experience working alongside neurodiverse children, teens, and adults, including those with ADHD, Autism, learning differences, trauma, and sensory needs. I recently completed training to become an ADHD Clinical Services Provider.
In one-on-one sessions, I strive to create a therapeutic environment where every individual feels understood, respected, and celebrated for who they are. My goal is to offer tools that are realistic and help people feel more confident in navigating emotional regulation, behaviour challenges, work and school stress, grief and loss, and complex family dynamics.
With children, I combine play therapy, sand tray therapy, art therapy, somatic therapy, DBT, and narrative therapy in sensory safe sessions. With adults, I draw on CBT, DBT, somatic therapy, narrative therapy, grief and loss counselling, as well as generational trauma and burnout recovery strategies.
With families, it is my goal to support children and parents in building confidence, strengthening communication, and navigating challenging behaviours without shame or judgment. Whether a family is seeking support with emotional regulation, school challenges, sibling dynamics, or everyday stress, I offer tools that are realistic, affirming, and tailored to each family’s unique needs.
When needed, I focus on elevating the voices of children and caregivers within the community. I frequently liaise with schools, MCFD, medical professionals, and community agencies as an advocate and support.
I have lived experienced as an adult with ADHD and am a parent of children with diverse needs. I have navigated the complexities of academic, medical, and therapeutic systems as both a parent and a professional.
In the fall of 2026, I will be pursuing a Doctor of Counselling and Psychotherapy. The focus of my thesis is understanding the impact of childhood diagnoses on parenting and how to better support the well-being of all family members when a developmental or medical diagnosis is made.

Hello! I’m proud to be part of the compassionate team at Island Clinical Counselling, where we’re committed to walking alongside others on their path to healing.
My approach to therapy is integrative. I work with Integrative Body Psychotherapy (IPB), Somatic Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), and Solution Focused Therapy (SFT). It is so important to recognize the part our bodies play in our trauma and emotion. I am also a couples counsellor; I focus on providing therapy to those with attachment injuries. My approach is strength-based, person-centered and holistic. I feel it is important to work with a person on multiple levels so that deep healing can take place. I offer a warm and empathetic presence to my clients.
I found my passion for counselling and helping others through my journey in music. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Music, specializing in Opera. I am a professional singer, as well as a voice and music teacher. It was through this path that I discovered the healing qualities of music and voice. This inspired me to become a counsellor, and now I am able to work from both my musical and healing practices. I also can offer my clients voice-integrated therapy and music-integrated therapy if they desire.

Hi, my name is Shannon Heppner (she/they). I am a counselling intern with Island Clinical Counselling in the Nanaimo locations. I will be taking on clients and offering counselling in the community starting in January. My approach is holistic, warm, trauma informed, strength and resilience focused, an affirming and safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals, neurodiversity-affirming, with a lens focused on understanding thoughts, emotions and behaviours to create meaningful shifts in affecting change.
I also have a background of 20+ years in frontline work as a responder and rescue specialist. This first-hand work and education gave me a deep understanding of the trauma and resilience effects frontline workers face and how or when it is time to reach out. You are not alone.
When I am not working, I am a continuously learning through education and connection. I love connecting with my family and friends, hiking and exploring in all weather, kayaking, boating and fishing, walking my dog and or meditating.
I originally come from Powell River. In this nature robust small coastal community, I spent most of my time working and playing in the bush or on the water. Eventually started my career as a rescue specialist for the Canadian Coast Guard which brought me to Vancouver Island. I got my Community Mental Health Worker Certificate and had the opportunity to work along side people who lived with barriers to housing, mental health, substance use and brain injury. Working alongside these folks drew on my curiosity of how can I do more to support people and the barriers that sometimes come with being human. I went to Vancouver Island University and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Child and Youth Care. From there I was able to work along side teens and children in the schools as well as their families in community and nature. I am currently completing my Masters in Counselling through City University of Seattle.

I have over 15 years of experience working with adults, children, teens, and families. As a Senior Clinician at Island Clinical Counselling, I am passionate about providing creative and safe mental health supports that are encompassed within an honest, respectful, and attuned presence for my clients. Clients find my nurturing approach alongside them to be supportive, while they create meaningful change by connecting to themselves and others.
